Inauguration Day, 2025
Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who understood that the pursuit of justice required not just courage and determination, but also joy. In his life and work, he demonstrated that choosing joy in difficult times isn't a distraction from serious purpose – it's fuel for the long journey toward building a better world. Our social media feeds will fill today with quotes and speeches from Dr. King, yet he was a person of far more than words - he took action and had profound influence on other leaders of his time.
This speaks to the breadth of his influence, as many of his peers and followers became great leaders themselves. He inspired others to cultivate a vision for change, commit to nonviolence, and believe in the power of sacrifice.
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning
This wisdom rippled outward, touching and inspiring other great spiritual leaders. His friend and fellow peace advocate Thich Nhat Hanh carried forward this message of mindful joy, teaching that peace begins in our own hearts and that "when we walk like we are rushing, we print anxiety and sorrow on the earth. We have to walk in a way that we only print peace and serenity on the earth."
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who led South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, embodied this same spirit when he taught us that "hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness." Like King, he understood that joy and positive change are intertwined, reminding us that our small acts of goodness, when joined together, can "overwhelm the world."
It is cheerful to God when you rejoice or laugh from the bottom of your heart
Today, as we face our own challenges, we're called not just to remember Dr. King's words, but to live as he lived – finding joy in service, strength in community, and hope in action. His legacy lives on not just in grand speeches and monuments, but in every small act of kindness, every moment of chosen joy, and every step taken toward the beloved community he envisioned.
The greatest honor we can pay to Dr. King's memory is to understand, as he did, that the path to transformation is paved with both determination and joy, both service and celebration, both courage and love. We can begin today: by getting to know our neighbors, supporting our local communities, finding ways to serve that bring us joy, and building bridges through simple acts of kindness. Every small step matters – each gesture of understanding, each moment of service, each choice to bring more light into our world continues Dr. King's legacy of hope and fuels our own.
